The ship was believed to be taking cigarettes in Turkey to Italy. The crew abandon ship during the storm and, as the Greek Navy pursued them, the Panagiotis was abandoned to the storm.

The smuggling tale was never established and this left a lot of room to gossip. They tell us the Panagiotis had been running contraband the years before it was finally discovered. Others go on to relate how the crew concealed part of the cargo somewhere along the beach, and people rushing to the scene to seize whatever was available to them. How about the way that must have appeared?

The Intrigue Continues:

There is no feedback on what happened to him and thus the mystery only continues to expand. It makes visitors fond of creating their version of the story. The rusting ship in the sand seems to not be ready to tell the secrets it has.

  • Be aware of the risk of falling rocks from the cliffs.
  • Swimming is permissible of a safe distance of the shipwreck and boats.

  • It is also good to use environment-friendly tour operators as a way of preserving the region.
